 This image represents a system
developed for imaging of "apoptosis" (programmed cell death). The red
represents dead cells and the greenish yellow represents live cellular
activity. |

Institute of Psychiatry prit.go.jp/en/nrpt/graph.html "Astrocyte,
a star-shaped cell of the nervous system, that provides nutrients, support, and
insulation for neurons of the central nervous system; one of the major
categories of neurological cells, the largest cell population in the brain,
approximately 50% of brain cells. Recent advances in glial biology indicate
that astrocytes may play a much more dynamic role in modulating neuronal
activity than previously thought. Current hypothesis is that there are
microdomains within astrocytic syncytium that interact with neuronal synapses
to facilitate or to dampen neuronal excitability and/or neurotransmission."
