"I enjoyed Latin while I was in school. Latin was a requirement at that time but is no longer deemed important. I hope you can figure out some of my favorite Latin sayings, what Japanese call, kotowaza. These say a lot without being verbose. They can be applied to contemporary political and social shenanigans."

We had to get out the books to figure these latin phrases, proverbs and sayings.

Avarice is never satisfied.
Are not the Bushies the supreme example of insatiable avarice?

Honor has burden.

What the priviledged can do, the rest can not.

It is easy to give away the property of others. Savings, Taxes, Social Security Funds, Funds of Civic and Municipal Institutions, National Treasuries, Oil and Mineral Resources of Foreign Sovereign Nations, etc. These ultimately can be given away to become the property of America's Cognitive Elite, using a decorous facade provided by a "Free Market".

What were once vices are now customs.

Laws favor the vigilant, not the inattentive (sleeping). Liberties are never safe from the power of special interests in ersatz democracies. Is this not the best of all possible worlds?

Troop deployments and oil map of Mid-East region, 2001
Given the fact that we are at the peak of oil, the US has no choice but to control this precious commodity. The amusing parts are the excuses given for necessary actions.

The Princess and the Frog
"The sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept along the greensward, and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle window, revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder, gaping in frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her, disbelieving the magnitude of the frog's deception, screaming madly, 'You lied!'"

Why does it continue? Great is the desire to live on after dying.

Televangelist Urges 'Prayer Offensive': AFP, July15, 2003
"Pat Robertson launched a 'prayer offensive' against the Supreme Court, urging his supporters to pray for the removal of three sitting justices. 'Would you join with me and many others in crying out to our Lord to change the Court?' Robertson asked viewers of his Christian Broadcasting Network."
"'Would it not be possible for God to put it in the minds of these three judges that the time has come to retire? With their retirement and the appointment of conservative judges, a massive change in federal jurisprudence can take place,' he said."
Story....

Massive change in federal jurisprudence? That will be the least of it. Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan never looked so good.

to conquer or die

A restatement of "to be or not to be," for contemorary Republicans given the world's "historic opportunity". Hegemony is at a crossroads; could it be extinguished? Could the world ever be as John Lennon imagined?
Some see conquer or die as a defining choice for Islam. But isn't it really the ultimate choice for religion in general, given that so many wish that humanity advance? Can humanity really advance to realize the promise of a bright future without letting go of such a weighty sack of cabbages?

Wouldn't this be nice?
"We should pray for the victims and the families of those who have been hurt or murdered in these crazy acts. Yet we should also pray that America does not return to "business as usual," but rather turns to a period of repentance and atonement, a turn in direction of our society at every level, a return to the most basic Biblical ideal: that every human life is sacred, that "the bottom line" should be the creation of a world of love and caring, and that the best way to prevent these kinds of acts is not to turn ourselves into a police state, but turn ourselves into a society in which social justice, love, and compassion are so prevalent that violence becomes only a distant memory."

Where in the world would it be acceptable to be a Jewish Buddhist? Or a Buddhist Jew?
We are informed by correspondents that there is a popular blending of these two religions in Israel. The members who enjoy this fusion of concepts are called JuBus, pronounced [jooh-booh].

Buddha's Message
"In one of the oldest sutras, Suttanipata, the Buddha preached that, "The more comfortable our life becomes, the more convenient our life becomes, the more time passes, -- the more the human heart becomes cold in inverse proportion."
"Today, most of the people in the advanced countries are enjoying a level of material wealth and prosperity unprecedented in human history. However, it is also true that without realizing the difference between materials of happiness and happiness itself, people today have become intoxicated with superficial affluence, allowing their spiritual existence to degenerate."
"Self-centered philosophies tend to see the self as absolute, and this has become the fundamental cause that has created global problems in the 20th century."
"I firmly believe that for this irreplaceable earth to survive in the 21st century, there is no other way but to follow the Buddhist teaching of coexistence and symbiosis. And in order to repay Buddha's benevolence, I intend to spare no effort to convey this teaching of peace and equality to the whole world."

Most don't think of Einstein's theories and concepts as having a religious or spiritual basis. Einstein was once asked why he had been confident that his theories were valid when he had been a relative outsider in the circles of scientific cognoscenti. He replied that he had conceived of the conditions in the universe as God would have done.

Were religion a mental straightjacket, Judaism, as practised by the majority of Jews we have known, is the loosest. The loosest that is, after Buddhism. In fact Buddhism is virtually devoid of the mental straightjacket effect. What if people from Japan and Israel merged their religions? It is inconceivable that God would be other than pleased. Instead of religion being a mental straight jacket, people could free their mind and spirit to a degree which would probably be without precedent in human history.

Is God great? Of course that would necessarily be so. A great entity could not be angry with humans. God can only think that humans who would pray for help in winning sports events, winning vocational success, or in winning wars just don't get it. It's a mistake as large as the taking of the name of the supreme being "in vain" in the swearing of a spiteful oath, as humans do in many languages in many cultures. The notion that God expects humans to be fearful is so absurd that if God laughs that notion would certainly be included in his collection of jokes by numbers. Whenever religion is combined with strictures, exclusivity, or group favoritism, God is given cause to laugh. If God provides for a life after death, even atheism could not possibly be grounds for denial of that afterlife.God would not punish, rather god would instruct, if indeed God would do something.

"There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old system and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one." Niccolo Machiavelli

"Now I understood for the first time that all these problems are caused by a race asleep and thrashing about in its panicked nightmares. There will be wars and holocausts and genocides as long as God is portrayed and thought of as a tight-minded legislator, a feudal lord, an offended King, a hypersensitive Artisan - even if church managers condescendingly tack onto that ridiculous list the not-very-convincing footnote that He is also loving. As long as people dream that they are insecure and needy in some sort of eternal jeopardy, there will be atrocities. But as the human race grows up spiritually, and as individuals gain a personal experience of the God they have been worshipping in fear, they will recognize that much of their theology and philosophy is built on nightmares. That will be the day of peace." George Fowler

Is God female? Male? He is most likely to be neither. A gender is not necessary to create the universe.

Bush Wants Only Man-And-Woman Marriages, by Scott Lindlaw, AP, July 31, 2003
"President Bush says Americans should respect homosexuals, but he wants to make sure marriage is defined strictly as a union between a man and a woman. Government lawyers are exploring measures to enshrine that definition in the law, the president said Wednesday. 'I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I believe a marriage is between a man and a woman, and I think we ought to codify that one way or the other,' he said. Still, he urged Americans not to ostracize gays. 'I am mindful that we're all sinners, and I caution those who may try to take the speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own,' the president said, invoking a biblical passage from the Gospel of St. Matthew. 'I think it is very important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts, to be a welcoming country,' Bush said."
Story ...

Bush's Bottom Line? Homosexuality is a sin and that fact must be codified into law, "one way or the other."

It's probably just as well that he doesn't watch Japanese television. Homosexuals, transsexuals, transvestites, etc don't cause even he slightest raising of eyebrows. Wouldn't Bush and Pat both go ape-shit if the gay twins, Osugi-chan and Pico-chan appeared on American TV? But the funny thing is that Japanese think that they are emulating the USA which they call a "JiYu-na Kuni." Country of freedom? That's a real hoot.

Most people think of marriage as a necessary evil. A custom, up with which everybody must put. Freedom and liberty would be the best thing, in which case people would be free of a cumbersome ball and chain. Instead, in order to hope for a place inside the Pearly Gates, you have homosexuals tricked into desiring the same ball and chain with which heterosexuals are tied down. What could be more absurd? The president's Bottom Line, the translation of which is, "Respect homosexuals but know that they are damned."

Thai Man Stuck with His German Husband
Reuters, Berlin, November 27, 2003
"A Thai man who masqueraded as a woman to wed a German man has failed to get the marriage annulled, and now seems saddled with his husband."
Story...

Gay Marriage?
Good Ole Bill Buckley and a host of conservative iceholes rarely miss an opportunity to bash homosexuality. But guess what, jelly bean? Gay marriages are not the cause of waning interest in the marriage ball and chain. What is the real culprit? D-I-V-O-R-C-E and concomitant heterosexual serial monogamy. The solution of course is to make divorce illegal once again. Pat will probably get his wish. When three more conservative iceholes are put on the Supreme Court during the next four years of Bush's reign, we just might witness such a reversal.
In the meantime gay and lesbian couples complain about second class citizen status and point out the various pecuniary benefits enjoyed by members of heterosexual marriages.

It is a sin for a Taliban male to see any woman other than his wife naked, and that he must commit suicide if he does, So this Saturday at 4:00 PM Eastern time all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort. All men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their house to prove they are not Taliban, and to demonstrate that they think it's okay to see nude women other than their wife and to show support for all American women. And since the Taliban also does not approve of alcohol, a cold six-pack at your side is further proof of your anti-Taliban sentiment. The American Government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity. God bless America!
