Scientists for population reduction at scientists4pr.org have the ultimate
big picture perspective. scientists4pr.org/terror.htm
"This is a contribution to the 'road to Joburg'
forum run by UNED on the implications of September 11 on the agenda for the
World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002."
"This forum is most apropos for in our opinion
the events which occurred September 11 have introduced a new chapter in the
history of the human race. For the Global Summit to push on with its current
agenda will mean that the delegates are debating pre-September 11 issues while
the rest of the world are thinking about post-September 11 issues."
"In our opinion the Global Summit should change
it's emphasis profoundly to deal primarily with the issue of how to raise
living standards in all Third World and Islamic countries. We say this because
we believe that terrorism is borne out of the understandable envy that the poor
and insignificant have towards the rich and powerful. The simplest way for the
poor and dispossessed to compensate for their miserable existence is to develop
a hatred for the affluent in wealthy countries who appear to lead the good
life."
"If the Global Summit were to prioritize
raising living standards in all Third World and Islamic countries as a long
term solution to terrorism it could in effect kill two birds with the one
stone. In the first place it stands a better chance of actually mobilizing
public opinion towards improving the lot of the 1.2 billion people currently
languishing in abject poverty. And secondly if effective policies could emerge
from the Summit which do actually raise living standards amongst the poor and
dispossessed then it really would restore public confidence that the terrorism
problem can be solved."
"It is a truism to say that prosperous,
well-fed, contented people do not terrorists make."
"Our organization would like to offer a
suggestion of one way to substantially solve the problems of overcrowding,
poverty, illiteracy, and infectious diseases in Third World and Islamic
countries. We feel that WHO should be given a brief to provide state of the art
medical facilities for all the 1.2 billion people currently classified as
desperately poor."
"WHO would also be responsible for educating,
training and employing local indigenous people as doctors, nurses, paramedics,
support staff, cleaners, caterers etc. These medical facilities should be
constructed in villages and towns by local tradespeople, and negotiated and
paid for under individual contracts at grass roots level. These medical
facilities should provide free the full array of contraceptives that are
currently available in developed countries. They should in addition provide
pregnancy termination as a free medical service on demand. Local people should
also be trained and employed by WHO to act as counsellors on family planning
issues and sanitary and healthy living habits."
" Unless the developed countries now make a
concerted effort to really raise living standards in all Third World and
Islamic countries this new brand of terrorism that has now emerged will be an
ever recurring problem."
